Retro Redhead

Retro Redhead By Chandra Harris-McCray

Name: Jenna Hancock a.k.a. Miss Biscuit*
Age: 24
Job: Manager of Reruns and Rala in Downtown Knoxville
Where do you live: North Knoxville (with her slightly cross-eyed, but very handsome cat O’dell)

Your fashion sense in one word? Quirky

What three items are on your nightstand? Rosebud Salve, a plastic hair bow and “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor.

What was your style like as a child? I grew up in South Knoxville with parents who always encouraged my individuality. I remember when I begged to wear long, elegant white gloves in the second grade for picture day and my mother just held her tongue. Of course, I came home bawling because all the kids made fun of me! My parents always knew I had a fashion sense unlike any other, and that one day it would be appreciated!

Who has made a significant impact in the world of fashion? I don’t know about the whole word, but in my little world, I would have to say Janice Fuqua, who owns Legacy (in Hot Horse in the Old City). Like me, she feels very strongly about the importance of keeping vintage clothing stores alive; clothes in the ’50s and ’60s were made to stand the test of time.

If you could raid the closet of a celebrity, who would it be? A combination of Twiggy and Molly Ringwald? With maybe a dash of Joan from “Mad Men.”

Where do you love to shop? Of course, Reruns! Also Legacy, Nostalgia, thrift stores and I accessorize with kitschy stuff from Jay’s Mega Mart.

What is the biggest fashion faux paus you ever made? Men’s suspenders. I won’t go into detail. All I know is that they really do their job of pulling your pants up.

What is your fashion advice for women? To begin with, girls need to stop going to class at UT wearing pajamas. When did we stop putting together actual outfits for school, ladies? Also, I think it’s important for us to start expressing our individuality through clothes, instead of relying on a $1,000 designer handbag to do it for us.

Would you prefer to have a nice dinner or a nice pair of shoes? It depends on who’s paying!

Name an item you are craving to have in your wardrobe now? I really need more boots. Or a really fabulous vintage coat that fits me perfectly.

Name your three wardrobe staples: Plastic hair barrettes, mini dresses and tights.

Are you a natural redhead? Does a one-legged duck swim in circles?

What is your fashion philosophy? Your body is a canvas and your closet holds your paints. Getting dressed is your opportunity to come up with a really unique painting to show the world.

*Hancock was the first to be crowned with the title during Knoxville’s first International Biscuit Festival in June 2010.
