Winter Wish Book

There's only so many shopping days until Christmas.

In early November, storefront windows of New York City are magically transformed into fantasies. Bergdorf Goodman, Macy’s, Lord & Taylor, and Bloomingdale’s continue
a famous rivalry of grand window scenes that began in the 1800s.

You don’t have to go to New York for Christmas storefronts. As Frank Baum, author of “The Wizard of Oz,” wrote in an article in 1899: “Every village and hamlet in the land has some sort of window display of unusual merit to attract the public and further sale of Christmas wares.”

The first Sears Wish Book in 1933 featured Lionel electric trains, five-pound boxes of chocolate, and live singing canaries. By 1968, this American icon grew to 605 pages of toys and fashions. Many holiday traditions we love today began in the fashion world a century ago. Even the story of Rudolph was a store promotion for Montgomery Ward.

As Harry Gordon Selfridge, founder of the famous London department store, said in 1909, there’s “only ____ shopping days until Christmas.” The phrase stuck. With this spirit in mind, Cityview wants to get you prepared in advance for the holidays. This issue’s fashion feature is your window-shopping guide for holiday parties and the season beyond. Here, we present a few stores of our area in a Wish Book for Winter. Folly Boutique, Janice Ann’s Fashions, M.S. McClellan, Prestige Tuxedo, Boyd Thomas Clothing, Sole in the City, and Markmans have shopped the world to provide us with items to help you celebrate the 2017 season.

Here are layers of texture, velvets of wine-colored hues, the poetry in motion of swirling fabrics and the dramatic fluttering of bell sleeves, long sleeveless jackets that transform into long lean lines, geometric cut-outs, and carwash hems updated with modern design. From the elegance of Lapis and Port to the bold energy of Grenadine, you can decorate yourself in style, worthy of a display in a storefront window.
