55 Years Of Exceptional Service And Appliances

The global pandemic that hit in 2020 and its lingering effects have made doing business more challenging in many ways—especially for companies that provide vital, technologically complex goods like appliances. From chip shortages to factory shutdowns to shipping delays, the obstacles have been formidable.

Yet it is no surprise that the Knoxville Pattersons Home Appliances has not only survived during this unprecedented time but thrived: serving more customers, adding services, and expanding its footprint. The company recently opened a new store to the west in Cookeville, its sixth retail location, joining retail operations in Harriman, Oak Ridge, Farragut, Crossville, and the Rockwood Scratch & Dent Outlet.

In addition, “We’ve added a call center department to Pattersons so that we have more in-house help to provide our customers with the best service possible,” says Mark Patterson, the third-generation leader of the highly respected, family-owned business. COVID-19 exposed vulnerabilities in some businesses while revealing strengths in others. The reasons Pattersons has emerged as a model of strength and vitality include not only its solid foundation and legacy of service to its customer base, but also its breadth of affordable appliance options.

“The Knoxville community appreciates two things: local businesses, and affordable prices,” says Patterson, whose grandfather, Don, founded Pattersons in 1965. Mark’s father, Steve, ran the business for 35 years before handing the reins to his son several years ago.

“Because we are exclusively partnered with Whirlpool, we can offer the personal touches of a small business with products priced competitively with big box stores,” Mark Patterson says.

In an era in which staffing shortages have also had a challenging impact on businesses large and small, Pattersons takes pride in the expertise and longevity of its team members—and in the personal service that they provide.

“Our non-commissioned sales staff are knowledgeable about appliances and focused on providing customers with a comfortable experience,” Patterson says, “while our delivery and service techs are professionally trained on how to handle appliances with maximum care. We’re proud to offer appliance service from our in-house, factory-trained service technicians.”

Providing a broad range of appliance options appeals to today’s increasingly knowledgeable and savvy consumer. “Many customers appreciate that we warehouse a variety of home appliances to help serve them as quickly as possible,” Patterson says. “Although there are still some availability issues with some appliance models and colors [because of the pandemic], our warehouse makes it possible to have a good number of appliance models on hand for customer purchases.”

From the warehouse to the showroom to the kitchens and laundry rooms of thousands of East Tennessee families, Pattersons continues to keep the homes and hearths of its customers humming.

“We’re proud to have served such a loyal community as Knoxville for over 55 years,” Patterson says.
