Let’s Go For a Sail
Despite its landlocked status, Knoxville is defi-
nitely a boating town. The abundance of lakes and rivers
in our area—including within the city limits—places
K-town among the most boatable cities in the nation. But
for those longing for the salt wind in their hair, only the
ocean will do. Here are five of the best places around the
united States (and nearby) to see if sailing is right for you.
1. Annapolis, Maryland
Nicknamed “America’s Sailing Capital,” Annapolis is
as perfect for sailing as it is packed with history. When
you’re not exploring the ins and outs of the Chesapeake
Bay, you can visit the city’s many colonial-era sites or take
the less-than-an-hour jaunt to visit our nation’s capital.
2. San Francisco, California
Do you really need an excuse to sail through the bay
under the golden gate Bridge? There are plenty of
charter boats available, as well as group sailing experi-
ences that let you take the wheel and help hoist the sails
without taking full responsibility for your own boat. And
while you’re there, why not give surfing a try, too?
3. St. petersburg, Florida
Year-round sailing is a big plus for this sunny city.
Founded in 1892, St. Pete has plenty of history to
explore, as well as museums and galleries featuring art-
ists such as Salvador Dali and Dale Chihuly. Numerous
sailing schools are available for the newcomer or inexpe-
rienced sailor—and the sunsets on the water are nothing
less than spectacular.
4. St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands
The Virgin Islands are a sailor’s mecca—and happily, only
a quick plane ride from many united States jump-off
points. You can charter your own sailboat, or stay based
on land and take a day sail to test out your sea legs. More
than half of the island is a national park, and there are
many opportunities to snorkel, scuba, parasail, and more.
5. Abacos, Bahamas
Longing for a place where the breeze is balmy, the waters
are calm and sapphire blue, and no one’s in a rush?
These Bahamian islands stretch for 120 nautical miles
of paradise—yes, cool lighthouses and beautiful colonial
architecture are also included. Take short sails between
the islands and enjoy some of the world’s best beaches
along the way.
