Class Action:
Attorney Greg Coleman Discusses His Evolving Class Action Practice
Many in the public associate class action lawsuits with what Knoxville attorney Greg Coleman calls “coupon cases”: settlements that result in
the plaintiffs’ counsel inflating their own fees while individual consumers receive very little in the way of actual damages. For example, a 2011 settlement involving Walmart, Netflix, and nearly 24 million subscribers resulted in $6.8 million going directly to attorneys, $1.7 million for reimbursing the attorneys for their expenses, and only about $1.50 each for the millions of consumers monetarily harmed by the alleged collusion between the two big companies.
