Painting with a Personal Touch
Charles McLain graduated from college with a business degree, but rather than go to work for someone else, he took a different path. Having worked as a painter during his summer breaks from school (and enjoying it), then meeting a woman who would encourage him to pursue his dreams (his wife Sarah), McLain realized that he could combine the pleasure he derived from working as a painter with his desire to be in business. The end result? His own painting business; McLain’s Painting Service.
Like every other entrepreneur, McLain started small. “It was 1999 when I started,” recalls McLain. “It was just me and my truck back then, working job by job around West Knoxville. Luckily, every time I did a good job, people would take notice.”
And take notice they did. McLain soon built himself a reputation as a painting professional who was both affable and reliable. And as that reputation grew, so did McLain’s Painting Services.
In just a few short years, he was hiring. Since the early days of driving his truck from job to job, he has applied his business degree skills to build a company that now employs 16 painters, two estimators, a field supervisor, and a growing administrative staff. With that growth has come the ability to cover more territory; McLain Painting Services now serves just about every county within fifty miles of Knoxville; from Loudon, Blount and Anderson to Knox and parts of Sevier. As for the type of projects he takes on, McLain’s crews can handle both indoor and outdoor, from small residential to expansive commercial.
Each project begins with a walk through, where the details of the project are discussed and expectations are set. “We never go in to sell a potential customer. It’s always about building trust and confidence,” he says. And it’s that approach, I feel, that makes us different. I knew early on that there was an opportunity to do something different. It’s simple really; be trustworthy, be dependable. Anybody can put paint on a wall. Earning a person’s confidence and trust? Well, that’s something else entirely.”
