When Deb and Mike Held moved from Colorado to Rarity Bay, they didn’t expect to be moving out anytime soon. Yet less than half a decade after settling in to their new home, the couple has set their sights on a new home – not out of any dissatisfaction, but in fact quite the opposite! Over the years, the Helds became so captivated by the Little Tennessee River so near their dream home, they knew that they had to have their dream home not nearby, but right on the waterfront. For those of you unfamiliar with their work, Ron and Diane Bills – along with their general manager Shawn Jones – have been a staple in the custom home building industry here in East Tennessee for over a decade and a half, and they weren’t exactly new to the art when they came here, either.
“We have a lot of people who have been in the industry a very long time and know what they’re doing. Shawn has over 30 years of experience. I have over 25, same as Ron,” says Diane. “Our whole team has the same passion for quality for our clients that we have.”

“We have one rule, and I tell all our clients this: we need to have fun,” says Ron. “The design and build process should be exciting. It should be fulfilling. We’re helping you actualize your dreams. To do that, you have to have fun.”
Diane breaks down the actual design process in some more detail.
“Once you’ve chosen your lot, then we’re working with our prominent architects and we determine what size of house you want, what style you’re looking for, the things you absolutely have to have in your home and what you can’t live without. We take into account your lifestyle, your budget, and the lot itself. We position the house on the lot so that it takes advantage of the views. We have a line-by-line-item budget so that we stay within the budget you have. And then with our interior designer we help design the home all the way through,” says Diane. “We help the client work through every part of the process, from the foundation to painting the walls to the final unveiling of their dream home.”
The Helds certainly seem to think this process bears fruit – after all, this is their second run at it.
