The City of Knoxville’s Concerts on the Square runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from May 8 through June 28, and Tuesdays from July 3 thought August 28 in Market Square. The series was designed to provide a lower-key replacement for the immensely successful Sundown in the City, which eventually outgrew its venue after serving the purpose of bringing people downtown and revitalizing the square.
The city began its Tuesday Jazz Series in 2012. In 2013, a Variety Series began on Thursdays through the end of June, with Shakespeare in the Square taking over for the remainder of the summer.
As the city’s Director of Special Events Judith Holtz notes, “It’s so much fun to watch families going through the square and kids dancing and singing. It adds another element of ambience to the square.”
