DINING GUIDE
Original Freezo
Swing by this drive-in for frozen treats galore. A local favorite, the Original Freezo has withstood the test of time to remain a fixture in the Happy Holler area. Grab a Peanut Butter Milkshake for a delicious on-the-go treat. Prefer to slow things down and take in the scenery? Savor a Hot Fudge Sundae while lounging in Freezo’s patio area. And—of course—you can’t go wrong with a classic Soft Serve Ice Cream, piled generously on a cone.

Coolato Gelato
Fresh gelato in 18 to 24 flavors? Delizioso! Often called “Italian ice cream,” gelato
is richer and denser than ice cream as we know it—but with half the calories and butterfat. Try the Affogato—a
shot of espresso over vanilla bean gelato—for a tasty pick-me-up on a sweltering afternoon. If you’re in a mood for a traditional southern flavor, try the Peach Sweet Tea. Indulge in Coolato’s patio area or take your treat to nearby Krutch Park and soak up the sun.

Kay’s Ice Cream
First opened in 1934 by Frank Koll- mansperger, Kay’s—and its giant metal ice cream cone sign—has remained a permanent fixture in Knoxville. The local hotspot is known for introduc- ing a wide variety of flavors in a world previously dominated by chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Regulars enjoy the Superman—a colorful take on traditional vanilla—and the Lemon Custard, a sweet, creamy, and subtle flavor—without the sour. Don’t forget to bring your paper money to this cash- only establishment.

PopCulture
Nothing matches the sensation of sum- mer’s first ice pop—a cold, refreshing treat amid the sweltering heat. It’s a sea- sonal ritual. But aren’t you a little sick of those store-bought varieties? Fear not, foodies. PopCulture has brought a more adventurous and artful selection of pops to Knoxpatch, with flavors such as Dulce de Leche and Pineapple Chili. In addition to a freestanding store, these paletas are available from its roving truck and in several local stores, includ- ing Three Rivers Market and Just Ripe.
