Restoring Lives, One Patient at a Time
Pain Medicine of the South offers a chance for people struggling with chronic pain to reclaim their lives
When Dr. Donald Jones first opened Pain Medicine of the South, he did so with a clear mission: to help people in East Tennessee reclaim their lives from the grip of chronic pain. Today, that mission continues under the leadership of his son, Dr. Mark Jones, a double board-certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain specialist, and the dedicated team at Pain Medicine of the South.
“Our ultimate goal is simple,” says Dr. Jones. “We want patients to be able to live their lives without needing us anymore. If someone who once struggled to get out of bed can now enjoy time with their family, go back to work, or simply walk without pain — that’s success.”

A Comprehensive Approach to Pain Relief
By the time most patients arrive at Pain Medicine of the South, their pain has already taken away activities they love — whether it’s working, exercising, or spending time with family. Dr. Jones and his team use advanced, minimally invasive techniques to restore mobility, independence, and quality of life.
The practice has recently expanded with the addition of Dr. Taylor Mansfield, a Knoxville native who returned after several years of practice in North Carolina. Together, Dr. Jones and Dr. Mansfield provide a full spectrum of interventional pain care — supported by an in-house research program that ensures patients benefit from the very latest treatments and innovations.
“I wanted to help build a truly comprehensive pain center in Knoxville,” says Dr. Mansfield. “What makes this team special is not only that we stay at the forefront of medical advances, but that we’re contributing to them.”
Stories of Hope and Healing
The impact of interventional pain medicine can be life-changing. Dr. Jones recalls one patient, a pastor in Sevierville, who could no longer stand in his pulpit due to severe back pain.
“After a targeted intrathecal pain pump procedure, he was able to stand and preach again,” Dr. Jones shares.
Dr. Mansfield has seen similar transformations: “Some patients come to us essentially bedridden. But after a short procedure, within days they’re walking again. It’s remarkable to watch.”
While not every case is solved overnight, Dr. Jones emphasizes that most patients can find meaningful relief. “Nine times out of ten, we’re able to pinpoint the cause of chronic pain and offer an effective solution.”
Expanding Access to Care
To better serve the region, Pain Medicine of the South is opening a new surgery center in Lenoir City this fall, allowing more patients to receive timely, advanced treatment close to home.
For Dr. Jones, these new developments are both a continuation of his father’s mission and a fulfillment of his own calling: “We’re proud to help people get back to doing what they love — because that’s what brings true happiness.”
