Best of the Best 2024

0

Each year, we ring in the season by announcing our Best of the Best winners. We celebrate the people and businesses who you told us make this community all that it is. But what exactly is “the best?” It has a different meaning for everyone. And while I might not know our readers’ exact reasons to cast their ballots, I envision what goes on behind the scenes of those businesses that might lead them to this title.

You don’t win the best without hard work and dedication, without a spectacular company culture or a team filled to the brim with go-getters. You also don’t win if you don’t have the right leadership. To earn such a title means there is so much more to your business than what customers see. And I’d like to congratulate all of our winners for putting in the work behind the scenes to make the experience for your patrons a memorable one.

This year, as I looked through our listings, I felt inspired by the number of women-led businesses that were on it. We believe it may be the most number of women-run businesses ever in our listing.

I’ve spent my fair share of time watching women step into the limelight and still make time to mentor others, champion other females in their company, or prove to many out there that the stereotypical saying that, “You can’t have it all,” is simply not true. I’ve also spent a lot of time interviewing them.

As a woman in business, I feel inspired by their talents and their leadership, and I felt it was time I reached out to some of our winners (who you see on our cover) to ask them how they got where they are and what advice they have for those of us still striving for that next step. I was blown away by how gracious they were to share their words of wisdom with me, and in extension, you.

Stepping out on your own or putting yourself in that position to lead is not an easy task. it takes guts. And as Jenny Vipperman, CEO of ORNL Federal Credit Union told me, you have to be willing to take a risk on yourself. “If you’re not, how can you expect anyone else to?” she said. Good point, Jenny.

“That could mean putting your name in for the promotion, taking the leap of faith to another job, making a move to another area for your career, educating yourself through school or reading,” Jenny said. “Whatever it takes to improve yourself.”

This idea of stepping out on a limb, taking a risk, and trusting in yourself enough to do it kept coming up over and over again with the women I spoke with. As Michelle Amelse, owner of Amelse & Edmonds CPAs reminded me, “Taking calculated risks is a necessity to progression in your work life – and in life in general. You will never grow if you stay in the same place. Taking steps outside your comfort zone can be scary, but it is a must if you want growth.”

The growth mindset, something I’ve been reading a lot about lately. It’s this idea that the way you excel, even become more emotionally intelligent (a topic for another issue) is to ensure you’re approaching life with a growth mindset, not a fixed one. Mandy Hancock, owner of Mandy Hancock Law, expressed it this way: “Focus on developing a mindset that embraces challenges as opportunities. This perspective not only fosters resilience but also encourages you to learn from setbacks.”

We have all heard these comments that failure is necessary to move forward, but it was comforting to hear so many successful women in this community bring home this point. They’ve excelled in their respective industries, but all share the idea that through failure and challenge, we learn and grow. April Thomas, owner of Born This Way Body Arts, called failures “necessary stepping stones to success,” adding that, “daily small failures are opportunities to grow, be self-aware, and make the next day better.” I couldn’t agree more.

Through setbacks, however big or small, we have the chance to catapult forward, right? Well, part of that is also believing in yourself enough to know that whatever the next step is, you can handle it. Never underestimate your abilities and your worth. While Laura Goff, local artist was speaking directly to the creative world when she mentioned this idea, it really applies to just about anywhere. “Don’t negotiate with yourself,” she said. “Determine what your time and creativity is worth. Value talent appropriately. Do not second guess this phase.” In other words, you’re worth it.

Nearly all of these women also reminded me that part of advancing forward is remembering to surround yourself with people who value that growth as well. It’s a concept we learned as kids: “surround yourself with the right crowd,” but it still applies!

“I attribute a lot of my success to surrounding myself with the smartest, hardest working, most dedicated and mission-aligned people I can and empowering them to collaboratively run their business lines,” Jenny told me. “I do not need to be the smartest in the room or make every decision, and I am open to changing my mind when presented with a good reason to. I also celebrate my teams’ wins bigger than my own, and the result is we achieve more than I ever could by doing it alone.”

Laura Slyman, who owns Slyman Real Estate, mentioned this idea as well and for her helped her grow in her industry. “I’ve never looked at fellow agents as ‘competitors’ but rather as those that I can learn from and those that I can potentially be working with in the future. In the beginning of my career, I was able to gain knowledge from those more experienced and successful agents.”

This idea of learning from those around us is one I’ve personally grown immensely from. I still do. Mandy reminded that their experiences and guidance “can illuminate your own journey, and help you navigate obstacles with greater ease.”

Alongside your network, you need a plan, which these women undoubtedly had. “Anything in life requires a vision, a goal, and an achievable plan to make it happen,” said Candace Viox of Water Into Wine, who felt so inspired by her goals that she laid out a culinary path forward until she reached them.

This was more than just reaching the destination, the journey was just as important. At some point they found their mission and purpose and they began advocating for themselves in a different way so that they could achieve it. And they pushed through, even when things got hard, with their why guiding them. “Although inevitably tribulations in business will present themselves along the way, remember you were passionate enough about your craft to open your business because you believed in it,” said Heather Whittemore, owner of Be Well.

In the process, they grew as people, as leaders, and supported not only themselves and their families, but their communities, too. Service to those around you was an important pillar of their success. And I truly believe that applies to whether you open your own business or put your hat in the ring for that promotion or leadership role. Your community should matter to you. If it didn’t, why put the work in to make it better?

I’m proud to celebrate these business owners, and know there’s a lot more growth to happen, but if these, and the many other people on this list, are the ones I get to feel inspired by, there’s no telling what will be next. So without further ado, I present your inspiration for the coming year, the winners of Cityview’s Best of the Best 2024. Now let’s go out, take risks, achieve our goals, and make this community shine in the process.
