Daniel Hood Roofing: A Roof Over Our Heads

Daniel Hood Roofing Systems ensures all people know that their challenges matter, whether they take place on the roof or in their everyday lives

Ladies, don’t turn the page. There are some things you need to know. You need to know about nails. Did you know that just one nail sticking out of a shingle can result in a stain on your ceiling and a leak that damages your house? Did you know shingles are not waterproof, but that it’s the roofing felt or underlayment that matters?

These are some of the important notices that local roofer, Daniel Hood, wants his community to know. His roofing company, Daniel Hood Roofing Systems, does something unusual: it guarantees every single nail, every shingle, the underlayment, even the workmanship. And he and his team promise to fix your roof and even interior sheetrock, if necessary. That guarantee extends not just for one year, not just for 10 years — but for the lifetime of your house, even to the next owner.

So who is this superhero roofer? On top of working in the field, he’s known to many in the community through a variety of venues.; he’s a former UT Football player, a radio personality, and even a yoga instructor.

“One of the philosophies of our business is ‘You matter,’” Daniel says. “We see the roof as a system that includes shingles and the material that goes under the shingles. We provide a lifetime guarantee by picking the best shingles and the best waterproofing material. I kind of make the joke that roofing companies make their name something they don’t have. If you see ‘Integrity Roofing,’ they probably don’t have it.”

“You Matter.”

Daniel’s tagline, “You matter,” carries a lot of meaning. Daniel was 34 when he began to take the idea to heart in his own life. He says that when you’re in a committed relationship, you have to put that person above everything else. That’s what his company does with their customers.

“I met a surfer dude once who said to me, ‘You matter.’ I went through this meditation module in yoga and realized I did matter. I wanted to share that with people. Because of that our company does some things that other companies don’t do.

“We get up on your roof so we can not only see what’s wrong with your roof, but also show you. A lot of roofers will quote you a roof with never stepping on your roof. We show customers our license and our rating with the BBB. In our industry we’re fighting against everything you’ve read about, for instance the out-of-town roofer who could be a con man.”

An added challenge? There’s no inspection process in the state of Tennessee; so you essentially have no idea if it’s done right until something goes wrong. And that could be years from the time you get the work done.

“You won’t know if a roofer has made a mistake for at least five to 10 years. Roofers are only required to warranty a roof for one year. When roofers give you a warranty and you have a problem, it might take months to resolve it due to complicated warranty processes. And every time it rains, you’re worried about the leak,” he explains. “If our product fails, we’ll fix all the problems. With any process that we do, we warranty it for the time you’re in your house and then transfer that warranty to the next owner.”

Paying it Forward

Daniel lays a lot of credit for his business success at the feet of a beloved principal, Dickie Sompayrac, now president of Knoxville Catholic. He says Sompayrac believed in him as a high school student and he flourished. He played football and his team won a state championship his senior year. He took home the Mr. Football award and Irish Achievement award that recognized the person who got the most out of their education and would use it to further the mission of Knox Catholic. He graduated from high school with a 3.7 and went on to UT to play defensive tackle.

Daniel later graduated with a business degree, one of the highest GPAs in all the SEC, and the title of SEC All-American. Now every Monday night, Daniel and Sompayrac visit with and mentor kids at the Richard L. Bean Juvenile Detention Center.

Daniel’s a lifelong football fan with a Saturday radio show on The Sports Animal 99.1 with Jason Swain and Josh Ward. On Sunday he’s part of the Sports Source hosted by John Pennington, giving his opinions as a former Vol.

And all of this is simply because that mantra, introduced to him years ago by a passer-by surfer, stuck. It meant something to him as a person and how he envisioned he’d build his legacy. And he’s taken it to heart, both on and off the roof.
