The Confidence Behind the Keys

The Confidence Behind the Keys

European auto expertise with honest advice and a personal commitment.

A Porsche in the driveway should be a pleasure. An Audi, a BMW, a Mercedes should make you look forward to the drive. But when a warning light appears, the question becomes less about what you drive and more about whom you trust. At Kadunza, Robert Kadunce has built a European auto repair business around giving that question a reassuring answer.

The clean, organized, technologically sophisticated shop reflects the precision these vehicles demand. Yet its most valuable offering may be something considerably simpler: a straight answer. What needs attention now? What can wait? And when does spending more money on a car stop making sense?

Kadunce expects his team to answer as though the person across the counter were a parent, sibling, or neighbor. That means explaining the repair, anticipating future expenses, and sometimes advising a customer to move on from a vehicle altogether.

“We’re not based solely on just making a sale,” he says.

That philosophy takes practical form in the details. Before recommending maintenance, technicians review available service history through Carfax. A dashboard reminder doesn’t automatically become another oil change on the invoice. If records show the work was recently completed and the light simply wasn’t reset, the customer gets an explanation and a reset. The goal is to understand what the car actually needs and help its owner plan accordingly.

Delivering that kind of guidance requires more than good intentions. Kadunce has deliberately assembled enthusiasts with deep knowledge of particular European brands. An Audi and Volkswagen specialist brings one perspective; a Porsche specialist brings another. Together, they give the shop a depth of experience that grows as technicians share what they know.

Across the business, Kadunce counts six master technicians. He pays for continuing education and rewards additional knowledge and certifications with incremental raises. Newer employees begin with basic services under supervision, building their skills through training and experience.

The investment makes sense coming from a man who once put his own retirement savings behind the belief that he could build something better.

In 2012, after roughly a decade in information technology, including mobile device security management at Y-12, Kadunce traded desk work for the work he had always wanted to get back to. His days off had been spent taking cars apart, putting them together, and helping friends, relatives, and neighbors. A love of BMW’s E30 helped fuel the enthusiasm. His driveway supplied the starting point.

He cashed out his 401(k), accepted the penalty, and took the risk. What began with BMW and Mini grew into a broader European specialty, expanding as he found the right people to support it. Today, the business includes two Kadunza locations and Vandegriff Auto Service, which applies the same philosophy to domestic and Asian vehicles.

Growth has brought greater capability, but Kadunce still measures the business by the relationship that follows a repair. Accountability matters as much as diagnosis.

“We never claim to be absolutely 100% perfect, but we do make things right, no matter what,” he says.

For the driver handing over the keys, that is the real luxury: skilled people, clear expectations, and a shop willing to put the lasting customer relationship first.
