We owe a lot to our doctors and their medical teams, which is why we’re elated each year when we get to call them out in such a robust and special way.
We started the Top Docs listing back in 2002. At the time, our publisher, Nathan Sparks, saw an opportunity to recognize the medical community, calling upon physicians to vote and recognize their peers that deserved some regional recognition for their work. That year, we featured 21 medical categories and recognized a total of 66 physicians. It took up half a page in the issue.
Fast forward to today, 22 years later, and you could say our section has grown. This year, we once again connected with our region’s doctors to call out the doctors who have gone above in beyond in their respective medical fields to help you, our readers, navigate the complex world of health. We asked them: Who of your peers are the best in their disciplines? Who would you send your family to if they needed medical attention? At the end of their voting period, we were left with this exceptional list, a snapshot in time of the physicians making a change in Knoxville.
We are blessed in East Tennessee to have the level of medical care that we have. A couple final notes about this exceptional list. They have been ranked as simply the top group of physicians in their fields, so you can feel confident in choosing any of the names listed in any category for any of your health needs. So for the 2023 calendar year, we present East Tennessee’s Top Docs of 2023. We hope you stay well this year as you venture into all the adventures that life brings you, and with these physicians on your side, that shouldn’t be hard. Be well, and stay well!

STRESS RELIEF FOR CHILD PATIENTS
“Beyond just specialized fellowship training in pediatric specific surgery, everything about our practice is oriented toward a child, whether it be the design of the office, the people that we hire to interact with children, nurses that want to work with children, equipment specifically made for smaller patients, and then an understanding and approach to their child as our patient to try to help it feel more comfortable and less stressful and create less anxiety for the child—and as a result for the parents, too….It’s not just the procedure, it’s the entire interaction with the child and the family that leads to alleviating that stress and helping them have the best experience they could have.”

GI GENIUS
“GI Genius is an artificial intelligence computer assisted program that enhances the detection of adenomatous polyps which are pre-cancerous polyps…We were the first practice in the state of Tennessee to implement this and the only practice in Knoxville to have this. It helps us in regard to picking up smaller or flat polyps that potentially could be missed without this….The obvious goal of screening colonoscopy is to detect polyps which are the precursors to colon cancer. Here is a device that is of no cost to the patient.”—Dr. Meade Edmunds, Gastroenterologist

TREATING THE ROOT CAUSE
“I think increasingly people are realizing, that chronic diseases are caused by lifestyles…That’s becoming less of shocker, but in traditional medicine what we have tended to do is treat the branches of disease rather than the root. We use all these medicines to treat blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, and treat the numbers rather than saying well what was the fundamental cause of this, now lets address it and pull this disease out from the root, using food, exercise, sleep, and now what were calling ‘the cultivation of peace’ (which we used to call ‘stress reduction’) using these things like medicine.”

A HEALTHY GUT FOR CHILDREN
“I believe the root cause of the majority of health issues in children is stress and diet. The way that healthcare is built, they don’t take care of that. They will take care of major surgeries, interventions, medications…but they will not take care of what’s causing these health issues in children and even in adults. This is what’s causing these health issues. We’re eating the wrong diet…Either people are sitting and doing nothing and not taking enough care of themselves or they are working so much beyond what their body can take…[Parents] need to take care of what I call the brain-gut access. They need to sit down and talk to their kids.”

CONCIERGE MEDICINE
“I still don’t think that telehealth works for a cough or a sore throat because I cannot see down the black hole of a sore throat, so there’s some things that still need to be in office, but doing concierge medicine over these last seven years has certainly given patients the liberty and freedom to text a picture, to ask a question, to make it so that I’m a lot more available to them and they get their questions answered a lot sooner….The care is more streamlined when they have easy access to me….It’s given me further insight into what my patients need.”

CHOOSING PLASTIC SURGERY
“Plastic surgery is an investment in yourself. You need to evaluate all the risks and benefits of any procedure you undertake. You need to put it in context, do your due diligence, do your research…As a physician evaluating a patient coming in requesting a procedure, No. 1 you’ve got to evaluate whether that procedure is right for them…You evaluate the patient to make sure that they are reasonable and make sure they’re in a mentally sound situation and that they’re not doing it for someone else….That this is something you’re doing for yourself; this is not a choice you’re making to your body at someone else’s request.“

FEMALE URINARY TRACT
“In general, women tend to take care of everyone around them before they prioritize their own health. Women are often taking care of their spouse or their children or their parents and so very often they delay coming in to talk about urinary symptoms, but I’m here to help with abnormal urination. Really no one appreciates normal voiding until suddenly its a problem so I see women anywhere from infections to incontinence to trouble emptying.”—Dr. Rebecca Lavelle, Urology
