September 15 begins a month of celebration of East Tennessee’s Hispanic and Latinx community

In a few short weeks, it’ll be that time of year again – a time to celebrate the myriad of Hispanic and Latinx cultures and communities that call East Tennessee home. Whether you’re part of one of those communities or are simply interested in learning more about them, this is a great opportunity to experience some vibrant culture here in Knoxville.

“We’re creating bridges between the Hispanic community and the larger community of Knoxville, so that everyone can see what makes us each special, but also what gives us common ground,” says Pedro Tomas, president of Hola Hora Latina’s Board of Directors. Tomas is one of the key organizers for Hispanic Heritage events here in Knoxville and is proud to have seen how much these events have grown over the years.

“The Hola Hora Festival started just as a table at a bookstore,” recalls Tomas. From there, it took over a block of downtown and a restaurant for an afternoon, before spreading to Market Square and finally to World’s Fair Park, where it is holding its 24th annual event this September.

The festival features traditional music, dance, and food, as well as several cultural exchange booths where you can learn more about the cultures behind the spectacle and the tastes. The festival isn’t the only opportunity to engage with Hispanic culture this month, however; there are other events going on to celebrate, and of course, there are the everyday opportunities to get to know your Hispanic neighbors.

September 6 – Frutos Latinos Art Exhibit

Though this date is technically before the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, that doesn’t make this exhibit any less of a destination. The exhibit debuts at 5 pm at HoLa Hora Latina’s flagship location for one night only and moves to the Knoxville Museum of Art on September 18. The show features numerous styles of art from Hispanic artists from across the region and gives the opportunity for visitors to cast votes for their favorite piece.
