Our Customers Are Family
“There are a lot of people who go to work every day and don’t like what they do. Luckily, I don’t feel that way. In fact, I have fun coming to work.” That’s how John Love, General Manager of Pattersons Appliances feels about his job. He’s reluctant to even attribute a title to what he does because, he says, “there really are no titles here. Like everyone else, I’m ready to do whatever is necessary to get things done.”
John has been with Pattersons for nearly 23 years, and like Mark, the third-generation owner of Pattersons, he talks about family; feeling like a family, treating each other like family, and treating their customers in exactly the same fashion.
The Pattersons—Don the founder, followed by his son Steve, and now Steve’s son Mark—have done a tremendous job of creating a family culture over these last 54 years. That culture drives how the company treats its customers, which is why Pattersons is well known for its customer service. Pattersons has also earned a reputation for honesty, fairness, and unparalleled product knowledge. “We know appliances better than anyone. And, if you buy a refrigerator from us and two years later the ice maker breaks, we’ll send someone to take care of it.”
Mark’s extensive knowledge of the appliance business comes from years of experience in all aspects, from making deliveries to working the sales floor and taking care of customers. “I’ve been doing this since I was 2, when my grandfather made me pose for our newspaper ads.”
Pattersons was voted Cityview’s Best Appliance Store and with five–soon to be six–locations, Mark says, “we continue to grow, but also continue to focus on what brought about that growth: the community. I’m very appreciative of this recognition, and I know that every one of our 40 employees is, as well.”
It is that focus on service to the community, doing what is fair, and “treating people the same way we want to be treated,” in the words of John Love, that has enabled Pattersons to thrive in the challenging world of retail appliance sales. Pattersons carries all of the famous-name appliances, provides same-day delivery, and can meet customers’ needs whether it’s parts or service. Mark is excited about his sixth store, which he hopes to open by the end of the year in downtown Knoxville, because it will serve as a design center, featuring very high-end products and brands.
General Manager John Love sums it up this way: “I go in and work hard every day, which is easy when you feel like people care about you. You want to work harder for those people. I love my job, of course, but the other part is that I want Pattersons to be here for another 50 years!”
