Best of the Best 2025

Here at Cityview, few things are more fascinating to us than watching as our annual Best of the Best voting unfolds. As the numbers climb—10,000 in a day, 30,000 in a day—it’s hard not to feel the pulse and energy of our community. One day a business or person is in first place, the next they’ve slipped to third, fourth, or fifth. Occasionally, they vanish from the top five all together, only to reappear later in the voting period.

And then there’s the moment when that vote-ticker crosses the 200,000 mark. That’s when we know we’re in the home stretch. In the final days, the frenzy hits—voters crank it up, businesses ramp up their social media campaigns, and challengers leap forward. In a single day, there might be four or five different names occupying the top slot in one category. It’s chaotic and thrilling.

It’s especially true in this, our 16-year anniversary of the Best of the Best. Reflecting back, in 2018 we noted: “What’s in Knoxville? 200,000 people. Thousands of businesses. Countless perspectives. One Sunsphere. One thriving city.”  In 2019 we wrote: “This just might be our favorite issue each year. Getting to watch as the contenders leapfrog over each other, constantly jockeying for the lead during the voting is amazing.” And in 2023 we proudly shared: “Our biggest year ever … we counted over 313,800 votes across 365 categories in the Best of the Best poll this year.”

So as we mark the sixteenth year of readers’ choice, what does “best” mean? For us it means this: businesses and people who show up. It means the ones you rally behind, the ones you believe in. It means the ones you vote for, multiple times, in multiple categories—not just once, but dozens of times, because the process is built that way. We ask each voter to enter at least 35 votes. Why? Because we want a meaningful sampling of opinion, not just one vote from your Aunt Sally for her nephew’s business. We want you to share your voice across the board: favorite restaurant, favorite hair salon, favorite local artist. Using those multiple votes gives us a statistically stronger snapshot of our community’s tastes and passions.

Watching that ballot migration—how people rise, fade, then surge again—is one of the most fun parts. In some years we’ve seen dozens of businesses jump 10+ places in the final 48 hours. The ticker’s spinning. The suspense is high. It feels like we’re choreographing a grand finale of sorts. And you’re all part of it.

But beyond the competition, there’s something more meaningful happening here. Every vote is a nod of appreciation, a way of saying “you matter.” The winners you’ll see in this issue are not just the top vote-getters—they’re the ones who earned community recognition. Look through the pages: long-standing businesses that have quietly become institutions. Newer ventures that came on strong. Individuals who turned their passion into impact. Each category in our list gives a snapshot of who in our community is making it happen.

Over the years we’ve tracked growth: more categories, more voters, more engagement. In 2022, we noted that the 301,000-plus votes said a lot—but not everything. In 2023, we surpassed 313,000. The growth means something: more voices, more perspectives, more of Knoxville and the surrounding communities’ heartbeat. But the numbers are only part of the story. The engagement behind them is what makes this special.

So what should you take away from this issue? First: participation matters. Your vote, your voice, your selections—they carry weight. Second: being on the list is a badge of community trust. Winners aren’t chosen by editors alone—they’re chosen by you, your neighbors, your friends, your peers. Third: the “Best of” isn’t static. It evolves. Because our community evolves. New categories, new businesses, new people show up on our list each year for a reason. This year we’ve added fresh voices, new perspectives, and the familiar favorites that still shine.

As you flip through this issue, I hope you’ll feel the momentum of these last 16 years. I hope you’ll feel the joy of seeing an under-the-radar business emerge. Seeing an established one hold its ground. Watching a local creative get the recognition they deserve. And your community’s excitement as it anticipates the opening of the vote each year. Behind the scenes, we hear from so many of you as that voting window approaches, eager to get started; we know first hand just how much Best of the Best means to you.

So thank you for being part of this process. Thank you for voting—35 times or more, across dozens of categories. Thank you for caring about your city’s people, businesses, and culture. And thank you for being part of what makes Knoxville and the region not just a place where things happen—but a place where things matter.

Here’s to the next 16 years of discovering the best of us.

Beyond the competition, there’s something more meaningful happening here. Every vote is a nod of appreciation, a way of saying, “you matter.”
