The weather forecast for the week says it’s the right time to get out and stretch our legs. Here are five beautiful greenways in Knoxville to do just that.
1. North: Sterchi Hills Greenway
6400 Fountain City Road. This greenway covers 2.2 miles and connects the Knox County/AYSO Soccer Complex to Tommy Schumpert Park and Sterchi Park, 1145 Dry Pike. Parking is available at both parks.
2. South: Ijams Nature Center trails
2915 Island Home Ave. Ijams Nature Center is a 275-acre wildlife sanctuary featuring 10 miles of natural surface trails plus a stretch of paved greenway. All of the trails are hiker friendly, although 3.5 miles incorporating Mead’s Quarry and the Ross Marble Natural Area serve both hikers and mountain bikers.
3. Center: James White Greenway
The James White Greenway runs along the Tennessee River for its entire one-mile stretch, offering a scenic experience for walkers, as well as the opportunity to view wildlife along waterfronts in East Tennessee. It runs east from Volunteer Landing Park.
4. East: Holston River Greenway
The Holston River Greenway is located within the 44-acre Holston River Park. The greenway makes a loop around a large open green space, then continues through a beautiful oak and beech forest to cross an abandoned rail line and connect to the corner of Riverside Drive and Holston Hills Road.
5. West: Lakeshore Greenway
Lakeshore Greenway is located within the 195-acre Lakeshore Park and makes a large loop, part of which follows alongside the Tennessee River. The greenway affords spectacular views of the Tennessee River.
